About this course

This course reviews person-centered therapy as Carl Rogers developed it and as clinicians use it today. Most clinicians learned the core conditions in graduate school. Fewer have gone back to Rogers's own statements of the theory, and fewer still have looked at the current research on empathy, positive regard, congruence, and the alliance. This course does both, then turns to practice: how the approach works with diverse clients, how it carries over to telehealth, where it falls short, and where professional ethics still sets limits, even in a nondirective approach. Included in the $69 bundle, or sold on its own.

Learning objectives

A sample of what you will be able to do after completing this course:

  1. Describe the main stages of Carl Rogers's career and the settings that shaped his ideas.
  2. Define the actualizing tendency and explain its role in person-centered theory.
  3. List the six conditions Rogers proposed in 1957 as necessary and sufficient for therapeutic personality change.
  4. Summarize the findings of the 2018 meta-analyses on empathy, positive regard, and congruence.
  5. Use several forms of empathic response, including reflections of meaning and empathic conjectures.
  6. Describe the main cultural critiques of person-centered therapy, including the critique of individualism.
  7. Summarize research on the alliance in video-based and internet-based therapy.
  8. Identify clinical situations in which the core conditions alone are unlikely to be enough.
