About this course

This course teaches a systemic way to work with veterans. You work with the veteran and the household they live in. That may be a spouse or partner and children, but it may also be aging parents, adult siblings, a new partner and stepchildren, or roommates. If they live alone, you still connect them to the VA, a County Veterans Service Officer, the Vet Center, and other resources. The course covers military culture, the effects of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), and moral injury on household members, reintegration, secondary traumatic stress, evidence-based couple and family interventions, ethics of multi-person treatment, and VA and Vet Center resources. It is built around the Vet Center model of care, first opened in 1979, and around Minuchin’s structural family therapy (joining, enactments, boundaries, hierarchy, and careful unbalancing). It also covers Vet Center groups, Veterans Service Officers, peer support such as AA and Al-Anon, and a clinician resource list. Included in the $69 bundle, or sold on its own.

Learning objectives

A sample of what you will be able to do after completing this course:

  1. Describe core features of military culture that shape how veterans and their households seek and use help.
  2. Explain the core assumption of systemic therapy: that symptoms are maintained within patterns of relationship.
  3. Describe how PTSD symptom clusters show up in household routines and relationships.
  4. Describe the five stages of the emotional cycle of deployment and the household tasks in each.
  5. Define secondary traumatic stress and describe how it appears in partners, parents, and other household members.
  6. Describe the structure and research support for Cognitive-Behavioral Conjoint Therapy for PTSD.
  7. Set up informed consent and confidentiality agreements for treatment that includes several household members.
  8. Describe the Vet Center model, Vet Center groups, Veterans Service Officers, and VA and community resources for veterans and their households, and how to confirm eligibility.
